Gary R. Tyler, 82, died March 10, 2018, at MDI Hospital. He was born July 9, 1935, in Lubec, the son of Cecil K. and Queenie (Rice) Tyler.
Gary served in the U.S. Army from 1962-1964. After he was honorably discharged, he went to work at the Asticou for several years, before going to work at the Mount Desert Elementary School as a custodian. He retired after 30 years of service.
Gary was an active outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was known for his carving and received many awards.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Joan E. (Rice) Tyler; two children, Sally Hulme and husband, Tony, of West Simsbury, Conn., and Jonathan Tyler of Goose Creek, S.C.; five grandchildren; Samantha, Emily and Trey Hume, Riaz and Jalal Tyler; and one niece. Gary was predeceased by his brother, Arthur C. Rice.
At Gary’s request, there will be no services. Private spring interment will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery, Northeast Harbor.
