HARBOR – Edward Havens Conklin, 80, died at his home June 16, 2016.

He was born in Southampton, N.Y., Feb. 1, 1936, the son of Edward Marvin and Doris Madeline (Havens) Conklin.

Ed attended school in East Hampton, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, where he was a naval photographer in Special Operations. He later worked at St. Joseph Catholic School and Shoreham Wading River School District, N.Y., serving as union president and HV/AC manager for both schools. He was 12th-generation American from the founding families of East Hampton Township, Long Island, N.Y. Since 1985, he and his wife, Dolores, spent many years in Southwest Harbor, where they vacationed and eventually built their retirement home. They became permanent residents in 1999. Ed had many interests, one of which included building and designing homes in and around Southwest Harbor. Over half of Ed’s life was spent in recovery, where he was a guiding light for other recovering alcoholics.

He is survived by his son, Paul W. Conklin of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughters, Betsy Gallaer and husband John of Medford, N.Y., Mary Paparella and husband, Frank, of Skillman, N.J.; grandchildren, Mary Yatcko and husband, Stephen, Thomas E. Gallaer, and Edward W. Paparella; great-grandson, Stephen J. Yatcko. He was predeceased by his first wife, Rosalind (Burzinsky); second wife, Dolores (Darnell); stepson, William C. Vail; sister, Marva Rowland.

His friends will be gathering to celebrate his life.
