Don Scott Hatcher

Mount Dora, Fla.

Don Scott “D Dad” Hatcher died peacefully at home on Dec. 15, 2020, in Mount Dora, Fla. He lived courageously and graciously with his cancer until his passing.

Scott influenced many lives during his 35 years of teaching at Winter Park High School, Lake Highland Preparatory School and Lake Mary High School. He believed that the education of the whole student was more important than just teaching them biology and he became a mentor for many of his students experiencing difficulties in their lives.

He was also known for his wit and his ability to instantly pun. Traveling and learning about other cultures was important to Scott during his times off from teaching. He also served in the Peace Corps in Africa for a time. He loved musical theater and traveled to New York frequently to enjoy Broadway. While spending summers and eventually living for a time in Maine, he became interested in Zentangle and began designing note cards. He also enjoyed his time as a tour guide for cruise ship passengers visiting Bar Harbor. It provided another outlet for teaching and showing his sense of humor. After returning to Florida, he spent many hours gardening and tending to his orchid collection.

Scott was born in Pikeville, Ky., on Dec. 12, 1946, to Walter T. Hatcher Jr. and Annette Scott Hatcher. He did his undergraduate studies at Florida State and received his Master’s in Science Education from the University of Iowa. Most of his life was spent in Central Florida.

He is survived by his loving wife, Chloe; his brothers Walter “Hatch” (Sammie), Phil (Mary Jo) and Frank Hatcher; his stepchildren, Jeffrey, Andrew and Gretchen Weisner; nine grandchildren; three nieces and one nephew. All were better for having him in their lives. He was predeceased by his parents and two grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held in the spring when it can be COVID-safe. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the following: Ellsworth Community Music Institute, P.O. Box 56, Ellsworth, ME 04605 or online at Winter Park High online at or by check to Winter Park High School, 2100 Summerfield Road, Winter Park, FL 32792 with a note referring to Scott Hatcher Memorial Fund.
