Dolores Barbara Gower

Dolores Barbara Gower, 91, died comfortably surrounded by family, on Dec. 30, 2019, at Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital in Ellsworth. She was born on Jan. 1, 1928, in New Britain, Conn.

Dolores, a longtime resident of Bar Harbor, enjoyed traveling, walks in town and on the shore path, gardening, as well as movies and music. Her fondest memories, as a young woman, were living and working in Palm Beach, Fla., where she met her husband, Charles. She loved New York City, and worked at Saks 5th Avenue. As her family grew, she traveled to her dream destination of Hollywood, Calif., followed by trips to San Francisco, Minneapolis and Chicago.

Dolores cherished her special bond with her dear friend Bethany Shea. Bethany provided many years of laughter, support and care. Bethany was like a daughter to Dolores, and continues to be a sister to Charlie, Donna and Laura. For decades, the family has been blessed with Tom Backiel, who has cared for Dolores’s son Joseph, throughout his long struggle with autism. Tom’s miracle gift of love and support for Joseph has been unwavering and his selflessness is a true gift to Dolores and her children.

Dolores is survived by two sons, Charles E. Gower Jr. and partner Sue Stanley and her daughters Olivia and Emma, of Bar Harbor, and Joseph Gower of Bangor; two daughters, Donna VanMetre and husband, Craig, of Chicago, Ill., Laura Jauch and husband, Andy, of San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren, Ben and wife, Ashley, Nathan and wife, Holly, and Eden; two great-grandchildren, Harrison and Dalton. She was predeceased by her former husband, Charles.

A memorial service was held by immediate family. There will be no public service. The family is asking that any remembrances be made to Autism Society of Maine or a charity of your choosing.
