CMDR. Arthur R. Horsch, USN-Ret.

obit-horsch-islflagVIRGINIA BEACH, VA. – Arthur Horsch, 77, died on Saturday, Oct. 8, with his 5 o’clock scotch and favorite book by his side.

Born in South Weymouth, Mass., Art was the son of the late Augustus Horsch and Nellie Finn Horsch and was a graduate of the University of New Mexico and George Washington University (MPA). Art proudly served his country in the United States Navy, rising to the rank of commander. As a naval officer, he traveled the world for 23 years, starting aboard the USS Collett and ending at NAS Norfolk. A highlight of his career was serving as professor of naval science at Dartmouth College, where he had the good fortune to meet Laurie DeBrot at a cocktail party. They married, bought their beloved ’65 Dodge Coronet convertible, and started cross-country for their next post in Hawaii. They had four children — Rich, Lisa, Bob and Steven — and taught them to value education, hard work, and family. He enjoyed socializing at the Kempsville Meadows Swim & Golf Club and the Larkspur Swim & Racquet Club and supporting his kids in their scout, swim, music and dance activities. After Laurie died in 1999, Art explored Civil War sites, traveled with Elderhostel, and walked every month at historic Jamestown to learn of their new discoveries.

Most important to Art was his family, who will remember him for his great love of history, his ever-present smile, and his motivational order to “get out there and CHARGE!” Art-Papa-Bia will be lovingly remembered by his children, Richard and Julie Horsch of Ballston Spa, N.Y., Lisa and Bob Clark of Seal Cove, Robert and Serena Horsch of Gaithersburg, Md., and Steven Horsch and Brian Allen of Arlington, Vt.; his grandchildren, Laurie, Hope, Ben, Jackie, and Grace; his siblings, William Horsch, Robert Horsch, Virginia Rodick, Judy Baxter, and Nancy Lightman; and a host of loving family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at the Rosewood Chapel at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22. Burial with military honors will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. Memorial gifts may be made to the Laurie and Arthur Horsch Scholarship at the Military Officers Association of America, or 201 N. Washington St., Alexandria, VA 22314.

Know when to pay your respects.
