Cecil Eugene Sprague

Bar Harbor

Cecil Eugene Sprague, 93, of Bar Harbor, died at home on Nov. 11, 2021. He was born on Jan. 24, 1928, to Harold E. and Marion T. (Gott) Sprague in McKinley. As a young man, he worked at the sardine factory across the street from his home in McKinley (now Bass Harbor). He used to say he was educated “in the McKinley school system and in life.” In September of 1949, he married Lucy A. (Davis) from Bar Harbor; they were married for 65 years until her death in 2014. They lived in Bass Harbor at first, but he said that Lucy “didn’t like living where there were no sidewalks, so we moved to Bar Harbor.”

Cecil retired after 33 years as an OR orderly at the MDI Hospital and 43 years at the Jesup Memorial Library. He was a pillar of his family and the community. He coached Little League and attended as many family and school events as he could for his children, grandchildren and even some great-grandchildren. He was a highly respected Mason and Anah Temple Shriner for decades. He was a beloved member of the Bar Harbor Congregational Church, even having his own seat that people just knew was Cecil’s seat.

Cecil is survived by his daughter Vickie (Sprague) Bence, with whom he lived for the past seven years; three sons, Skip, Stephen and Wayne Sprague; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He also leaves two special sisters-in-law, Henrietta (Davis) McGarr and Louise (Spurling) Bond, as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members. Cecil was predeceased by his parents; his beloved wife, Lucy; a grandson, a great-granddaughter and his siblings Norma, Roy and George.

Arrangements were by Direct Cremations, Belfast. There will be a celebration of Cecil’s life in the spring, with the date to be announced later. Donations in Cecil’s memory may be made to Island Connections, 93 Cottage St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609.

Know when to pay your respects.
