Bruce William Bicknell, 77, died peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 19, 2018, at his home in Tucson, Ariz. He was born on Aug. 14, 1941, in Oklahoma City, Okla., to Coleman F. Bicknell and Agnes “Nancy” (Carruthers) Bicknell. Bruce spent his youth in Gorham, and graduated in 1959 from Gorham High School, where he was an outstanding three-sport athlete. He served two years in the U.S. Army, was honorably discharged, then went on to earn a business degree from the University of Maine at Portland. After graduation, he went immediately into the insurance business, where he spent his entire career. In 1983, he purchased the L.S. Robinson Agency in Southwest Harbor, where he served as president and was its principal owner until he retired in 2012. He was a long-term member of the Maine Insurance Agents Association, and served on the MDI and Ellsworth Housing Authority for over 25 years. Bruce was an enthusiastic gardener, avid golfer and longtime member of Kebo Valley Golf Club in Bar Harbor. He enjoyed good food, good wine and family gatherings featuring late-night cribbage games with his brother.
Bruce is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Pamela Droll Bicknell, and two sons from a former marriage; Bradley W. and his, wife, Cheryl Ackert-Bicknell, and grandson Brandon of Rochester, N.Y., and son David R. and wife, Ann Donahue Bicknell, of Brooklyn, N.Y. He also leaves his brother Brian and his wife, Patricia, of Yarmouth, his stepbrother Edward A. Taber III of Ruxton, Md., and his mother, Nancy Bicknell Taber, of Gorham as well as three nieces and four step-nieces. He was predeceased by his father, Coleman Forbes Bicknell, and his stepfather, Edward A. Taber Jr.
