Bob Myers

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Bob Myers (William Robert Myers), 85, died on March 23, 2017, in his home in Southwest Harbor with his wife, Dona Parker, by his side.

A friend commented recently, “In all my interactions with Bob, he was thoughtful, generous and kind, and it made me glad to be with him and to learn from him. I think of him as a soft-spoken speaker of important truths and a man who regularly and sincerely cared about others. Our community is greatly diminished by his loss but enriched by his contributions.” Another added, “He had a great smile!”

Bob was born in Canton, Ohio, Oct. 2, 1931, after which his parents, William and Catherine Myers, moved to Hartville, Ohio, where Bob grew up on a farm with his brother, Don, and his sister, Martha. After high school, Bob graduated from Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio. He continued his education earning MAs at both United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, and McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and finally a Ph.D. from Candler School of Theology at Emory University in 1972.

Bob and Dona moved to Southwest Harbor in 2009 from Decatur, Ga. Before Bob retired from Georgia Perimeter College, he had spent many years teaching courses on religion and philosophy at the Atlanta University Center Consortium and Mercer University. He was a biblical scholar and taught classes for Acadia Senior College for many years. Throughout his lifetime, Bob enjoyed playing music as well as singing in quartets and choruses. Bob’s generous spirit was appreciated by many on Mount Desert Island, where he regularly played his mandolin-banjo for children’s storytime at the Southwest Harbor Library, led a wintertime neighborhood round sing, played with the Blueberry Jammers Dulcimers and led singalongs. Bob played music wherever musicians gathered to enjoy each other. When something needed to be fixed around his home, Bob was always up for the challenge whether is was reroofing, hand mixing cement to pour over an embankment that was caving in, making kitchen cabinets or fashioning handmade wooden hooks to go above a shower stall. He was very inventive.

Bob is lovingly survived by his wife, Dona, and three wonderful sons who he raised with his former wife, Mary Ellen. His sons are Larry Myers; Rick Myers and his wife, Jane, and their children, Cole and Ellie. Also Randy Myers and wife, Susan Myrdal, and their children Stefan, Meghann and Emily Myrdal Hart and Dave Hart and their children, Lucy and Gabrielle. Bob is also survived by his step-family, Debbie and Jim Landers and their children, Emily, Katie and Will. He is also survived by his sister, Martha, and his brother, Don, and wife, Mary, and their daughters and their families. Bob’s memorial service will be Saturday, April 22, 2017, at 1 p.m. at the Neighborhood House in Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert Island. In memory of Bob, donations can be made to Hancock County Homecare and Hospice; c/o P.O. Box 931, Bangor, ME 04402.
