MOUNT DESERT ISLAND
Benita “Benni” R. McMullen, 73, passed away March 25 after a short illness. She was born July 21, 1946, in Winslow, attended Winslow High School and graduated from the University of Maine in Orono with a BA in Education in 1968.
After college, Benni moved to Mount Desert Island, where she taught physical education at the Connors Emerson School in Bar Harbor and soon after left that position to become the director of Harbor House in Southwest Harbor. In 1973, she was selected to be the executive director of the Bar Harbor YWCA, a position she held for 40 years. In addition, she served as one of the directors of the Island Arts Association and was a member of the Bar Harbor Rotary Club. In 2012, she created her business, Balsam Point Crafts, specializing in unique personal T-shirt memory quilts, among other crafts. Her many interests included cake decorating, quilting, her dogs and traveling. Friends who knew Benni will remember her for her immense love of the ocean as reflected by where she chose to live and travel, and for her loving and generous heart.
Benni leaves behind her cousin, Faith McMullen, of Old Orchard Beach and many close friends. Donations in Benni’s memory can be sent to the SPCA of Hancock County.
