Barbara (Swazey) Kelley, born Dec. 21, 1946, in Bar Harbor, passed away unexpectedly in her Orland home on March 23, 2020.
She was the daughter of the late Dana and Agnes (McKay) Swazey and was predeceased by son Maurice Kelley III and sister Mary Cox. She is survived by daughter Cheryl (James) Lewis of Lake Mary, Fla.; grandchildren Courteney and James Jr.; daughter Ami Gaspar (Kevin) of Orono; grandchildren, Avery and Lili Hammond; and sisters, Diane Dumond, Helen Hall, Roxanne Swazey, Lyn Swazey and Cheryl Tracey.
Barbara graduated cum laude with a degree in paralegal studies from Beal College in 1985 and received her degree in business administration from Husson University in 1988. She was an active Facebook user, seemingly on 24 hours a day, sharing anything and everything that caught her interest. She was particularly fond of turquoise jewelry and displaying blue bottles on her windowsill. Forever wishing she was 5’2” to fit the saying, “five-foot-two, eyes of blue.” She was always a dreamer, often catching us by surprise with her sense of wonder, never hesitating to turn the car around to read a sign that caught her eye. She was not much of a planner, telling us never to worry, things will always work themselves out. She considered it “having money” if she had enough to pay for gas, coffee and cigarettes; anything else was excess and better spent on her grandchildren. Her children and grandchildren want to express their immense gratitude for her unwavering loyalty and unconditional love and support. Barbara overcame her hardships and learned from her mistakes, teaching us we can do the same. We’re sure she already has a mechanic boyfriend and coffee shop bookstore.
Barbara’s wishes were to be cremated, having her ashes spread along the Algerine coast and planted with a tree. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Please share any photos and memories on Barbara’s Facebook page.
