Barbara Groben Sunderland passed away peacefully at her home in Ojai, Calif., surrounded by loved ones, on May 6, 2020. She was 99 years old. Barbara was married to army historian, Riley Sunderland. She was an OB-GYN. They resided in Washington, D.C., from 1958-74 when they retired to their beloved Bar Harbor, where they lived until 1988. They moved to Williamsburg, Va., and, upon Riley’s death, Barbara returned to Bar Harbor where she lived from 1993-2007.
For the last 13 years of her life, she lived with her “nieces,” Toni Pineau and Julie Lovejoy in Ojai. Barbara was an avid knitter, cross-stitcher, gardener, a voracious reader and a dedicated believer in volunteerism. She also regularly trounced her opponents in cribbage.
She is survived by her nephew, William Groben, of Sarasota, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents, Theckla Rodenbach and George Arthur Groben; her sister, Margaret Groben; her brother, Robert Groben; and her husband, Riley Sunderland.
A celebration of life will be held online on Saturday, Sept. 5, at noon EST. Please contact Toni for more information at [email protected].
