Ann F. Gilkes

Obit- ISL- Gilkes_NORTHEAST HARBOR – Ann F. Gilkes died at the age of 97 and a half on Tuesday, May 26, 2016 at Watermark of East Hill in Southbury, Conn., while under hospice care with family present and listening to Cole Porter music. She was the widow of Arthur Gwyer Gilkes Sr. of New York, Chicago, Village of Golf, Fla., and Northeast Harbor. They married in Forest Hills Gardens, N.Y., on Feb. 26, 1942.

She was born in New York City, N.Y., on Nov. 19, 1918, and the daughter of Henry Constantine Fullan and Lillian Marion Buckley Fullan of Forest Hills Gardens, N.Y. She is survived by her brother, Robert Buckley Fullan of Darien, Conn., and formerly of Essex, Conn., and predeceased by one sister, Amelia Scott Fullan and one brother, Henry Constantine Fullan Jr. She grew up in Forest Hills and attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Manhattan and TrinityCollege in Washington, D.C.

She enjoyed sports all her life and was an avid sailor, tennis and golf player, loved to curl and hike in her beloved Northeast Harbor. Although not a gardener, she loved flowers and prided herself in completing beautiful Japanese flower arrangements even until shortly before her death. She enjoyed painting and telling wonderful stories. She was always involved in each community where they lived and enjoyed a wonderful life of friends, lifelong learning, travel and remained interested in current world events. She lived her life with two phrases: “never complain” and “never explain.”

She leaves four children: Arthur Gwyer Gilkes Jr., Pittsburgh, Penn., Ann Colwell Gilkes Liu (Patrick) of Chicago, Ill., Judith Porter Gilkes Benson (Ronald) of Oxford, Conn., and Jane Scott Frances Gilkes Strassguetl (Kurt) of Munich, Germany. Grandchildren include: Arthur Scott Gilkes (Rebecca), John Gwyer Gilkes (Lindsay), Christopher Young Liu, Katherine Nicole Fullan, William Henry Benson (Traci), Christina Ann Benson Stanton (James), Laura Ann Strassguetl and Richard Lloyd Strassguetl. She also leaves three beloved great grandsons: Jack, Rory and Ridley and two step-great grandchildren: Jacob and McKenna.

A memorial service is will be held at a later date in summer at Northeast Harbor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Petite Plaisance, P.O.
