Alice M. Smith

Alice M. Smith of East Bethel, Vt., and longtime past resident of Pretty Marsh, Mount Desert Island, passed away peacefully early in the week of Oct. 14, 2018.

Born Alice Marie Smith to the Rev. Perry L. and Marion H. Smith in Southwest Harbor on Oct. 6, 1931, Alice was the middle child of three children. After high school, Alice attended Bucknell University and graduated from the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. Alice was a commercial artist with a number of marketing firms, including ones in San Francisco, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Boston. Once back in Boston, she purchased some land up on Mount Desert Island, and spent most of her weekends clearing the land and building a cabin. Eventually, she would build herself a house and make Pretty Marsh on Mount Desert Island her home, where she became a well known sign maker and member of the community for many, many years.

Alice loved the outdoors, and loved her pets. She also loved genealogy, and was renowned as one of the leading experts on the family of John Hart, signer of the Declaration of Independence. She was a longtime supporter of Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, Miss. Alice was a very independent woman who liked her solitude and privacy, but yet enjoyed the company of friends and family. Her distinctive laugh will always be remembered by those who loved and knew her, and so will be her many colloquialisms, as in her farewell saying, “Afta later”.

Alice was preceded by her sister Patricia Colteryahn and Pat’s husband, Walt. She is survived by her brother Michael Smith and wife Carlyn; her niece Ruth C. Matason and husband, Tom, nephew Philip Colteryahn and wife, Meike; her niece Clare S. Gaskins and husband, Ron, and niece Anita Iguchi and husband, Tetsuo; and nephew Robert Venus and wife, Jana; plus many extended family members and friends.

There will be no memorial service at this time. Per Alice’s request, her ashes will be released in Pretty Marsh sometime during the summer of 2019. If desired, donations to honor Alice’s memory can be given to Country Animal Hospital, 1533 Vt. Rte. 107, Bethel, VT 05032.
