Albert Day Jr

July 27, 1940-May 10, 2022

Albert “Al” Day Jr., 81, of Hardeeville, S.C., passed away peacefully on May 10, 2022, surrounded by this loving family. He was born in Bar Harbor on July 27, 1940, to the late Albert Winfield Day Sr. and Mary Cody Day. He loved his family, but especially his 26 grandchildren.

He is survived by two daughters, Zoe Ann Fleury (Mike) and Thelma Louise “Lou” Reynolds; one son, Al Day III; three sisters, Donna Day Moore, Sharlene Day Gray and Barbara Day Kahler (Brian); one brother, Paul Day; one brother-in-law, Tex Lowther (Barbara); one stepbrother, Tom Pitts; and 26 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Lowther Day; one son, Owen Reynolds; two brothers, Rodney Day and Jim Day; and one great-granddaughter, Brielle Hillary.

Al grew up in Bar Harbor. He went to Holy Redeemer Catholic School and then on to Bar Harbor High School. He was a very good athlete and played many sports. Basketball was his best sport and he played for four years, 1956-1960. He made many school friendships that lasted throughout his life. He came back to Bar Harbor many times to visit his mother and brothers, family and old friends from school. He leaves many good memories for all who knew him.

He loved to watch Geddy’s webcam with a view of the harbor.

After BHHS, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed at Parris Island. During this time, he met and married the love of his life, Thelma. When he got out of the service, he joined the Ridgeland Police Department. He went on to become a State Trooper with the S.C. Highway Patrol and retired after 25 years of service.

He was an avid outdoorsman and truly embraced living in the Lowcountry.

A graveside service was held on May 15 at the Ridgeland Cemetery in South Carolina.

Know when to pay your respects.
