Adam J. Watras

Northeast Harbor

Adam Joseph Watras ,64, passed away peacefully on Sept. 9, 2021.

Adam was born April 28, 1957, in London, the son of Joseph Watras and Janet Mary Millett -Watras. As a young teen his life path moved him from Connecticut to Northeast Harbor, where his family purchased “the Grey Rock Inn.” The Island’s beauty and exploration of all things Nature displayed captured his heart and soul instantly. He spent his youth learning every inch of wonderment from woodland trails, natural habitat and botanical varieties.

Adam spent his 40-year career managing his family-owned Grey Rock as an innkeeper. As the season neared each spring, Adam had new discoveries to share with his guests. When the guests would finish their Maine menu breakfast or brunch, Adam would converse with each guest, going over their daily itineraries. Often sharing his own experiences by giving suggestions for hiking mountain trails, carriage trails, nature walks and garden tours, Adam made every guest feel like the only guest; his smile, charm and love of nature glowed.

He would end some seasons by traveling to Hawaii, where he was captured and consumed by its natural beauty, becoming his second love to MDI. Some years he would migrate to Florida and enjoy his down time with friends and family. Most often Adam boasted aloud “My Island” when he described where he lived.

I give to you this one thought to keep- I am with you still, I do not sleep

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the Diamond glints on snow,

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle Autumn rain, when you awaken in the mornings hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circle flight

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not think of me as gone~~I am with you still~~ in each new dawn.

Adam was predeceased by his father, Joseph Watras, mother, Janet Mary Millett, and his sister, Melissa Penn.

He is survived by his son Forest Watras, daughter Sophia Watras, Valerie Griffith, who loved him dearly, brother Karl and wife, Heather Watras, sisters Amelia Tascillo, Francesca Gillespie and Victoria Donnelly and many nephews, nieces and friends .He also left behind his other special family, Isaiah and wife, Sandee Griffith, Emma, Abigail and Olivia Griffith.
