Dorothy Jane Fisher Benson

SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Obit- ISL- Dorothy Benson_Dorothy Jane Fisher Benson passed away peacefully on April 15, 2016, at Sonogee Rehab Center, where she had been a resident for the past eight months.

Dorothy was born on Jan. 31, 1925, and grew up on a farm in Sugar Grove, Ill., one of seven children. She was high school Salutatorian and the first in her family to attend college, earning a degree at Aurora College and later earning a teaching degree at University of Maine. While at Aurora, Dorothy met and married her husband of 67 years, Peter T. Benson III, of Southwest Harbor. After several moves, Peter and Dorothy settled in Southwest Harbor to raise their five children.

Dorothy began her teaching career at Tremont Consolidated School where she spent many happy years. She loved teaching and enjoyed the genuine friendships she made in the Tremont community. She was especially loved by her many students, who were a great source of pride for her.

In later years, Dorothy enjoyed tending her own gardens as well as visiting the various local public gardens. Having grown up in the Midwest, Dorothy was frequently teased by her family for her obsession with the ocean and taking pictures and film of surf. She had many, many pictures and yards of film of surf. Dorothy’s love for her family was paramount, with her favorite slogan being, “I’d be the first to admit my children’s faults if they had any!” She loved family picnics at Seawall Beach, lobster rolls and Dove chocolates.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Peter; her sons Eric and Peter IV; and her daughters, Susan Rand and husband, Bill, and Jane DeRevere and husband, Jeff. She was predeceased by her son, Carey. She is also survived by her brother, William, 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her family is planning a small, private service later this spring.

Her family would like to thank the staff of Sonogee Rehab Center for their kind and loving attention.

Know when to pay your respects.
