BAR HARBOR — The True Nature Zen Center began offering weekly opportunities to practice on Jan. 11 in the 2nd floor meditation room in Deering Common on the College of the Atlantic campus and will continue offering them every Monday.
Zen chanting and liturgy will take place from 6-6:30 p.m. Chanting is in the Korean Zen tradition and mostly in English. Words and instruction will be provided.
Zen master Seung Sahn said, “Perceiving your voice means perceiving your true self or true nature … . When we do chanting meditation correctly, perceive the sound of our own voice and the voices all around us, our minds become clear.”
Basic Zen meditation is scheduled for 6:30-7:30 p.m. This drop-in open sit for meditators of all levels of experience features one or two sessions of seated meditation (10-20 minutes each) with opportunity for questions and discussion. Beginners are especially welcome, and instruction is provided. If time permits, some basic teachings of the Buddha will be offered. Instruction will be offered in the Korean Zen tradition, although practitioners are welcome to use any silent meditation technique they choose.
Guests are welcome to attend one or both sessions.
