BAR HARBOR — The YWCA of Mount Desert Island has launched a four-phase project to improve the accessibility of its facilities, the first of which is now in progress.
The board of directors and staff at the YWCA MDI have had accessibility on their “to do” list for quite some time. The multi-storied building on Mount Desert Street presents a daunting challenge for some people because rooms and cooking facilities are on different floors.
“An elevator has been on the wish list for a long time; a zoning change last November makes it more achievable, as it could be added to the outside of the building, reducing the cost dramatically,” a spokesperson said.
The current estimate for the elevator and other improvements is between $175,000 and $190,000. The YWCA MDI has about 25 percent of that total. More fundraising events are planned.
