‘Some Writer’ comes to Swans school

Jenna Beaulieu of Island Readers & Writers sends word of the Some Writer! Island Tour that includes school visits and community programs on North Haven, Vinalhaven, Deer Isle-Stonington, the Cranberry Islands, Swans Island and Mount Desert Island throughout October and November. Each stop on the tour includes intergenerational events in each community, including theatrical presentations, book groups and many other exciting events.

Jenna explained: “Maine author and illustrator Melissa Sweet has written the first illustrated biography for children of beloved writer E.B. White, and Island Readers & Writers (IRW) launched her national book tour on Oct. 6 in North Haven through their program, the Some Writer! Island Tour. Swans Island is the third stop on the tour. IRW invites community members and Swans Island Elementary students to an author presentation, book sale and signing at Swans Island Public Library on Nov. 3 at 9 a.m. For more info, contact Candi Joyce at the library (526-4330). Following the public program, students will return to school with Melissa in tow, where she will lead writing workshops and view students’ projects based on Some Writer! and E.B. White.

There also is a community collage project currently going on at Swans Island Public Library. Through children’s programs and other activities, the community will fill in Zuckerman’s barn from Charlotte’s Web (painted on the library wall) with characters from E.B. White’s books, including Charlotte, Wilbur, Templeton, Gander, Fern, Stuart Little, Snowbell, Louis, Serena and more. The collage also will include artwork, writing or photos of pets and animals that are special to islanders and will remain on display at the library throughout December.”

The Geiger Scholarship application for camps and semester study programs has been extended. Please contact the library or Caroline Moore at the Island Institute for more information. Caroline will be at the Swans Island library on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. to discuss all of the Island Institute’s scholarship programs and their new MAP Program to support students in their college career. Students, parents and community members are welcome. Note that scholarships are available for sixth grade and up.

Quote of the Week: “By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heaven knows anyone’s life can stand a little of that.” – Charlotte to Wilbur in E.B. White’s “Charlotte’s Web”
