Women’s social started

Donna Wiegle has announced to the women of the island: “Ladies … are you in need of some socialization this winter? Need to get out of the house? Some support? A friendly conversation? Karen Martin and I have started a women’s social/support group that will meet at the Mill Pond Health Center every Monday morning at 10 a.m. for coffee, tea and conversation. The first get-together was on Feb. 5. Some weeks we might have a guest speaker or maybe even a craft. We’ll see what those attending might be interested in.”

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Brad Ames, who passed away at the Veterans’ Home in Bangor on Thursday, Feb. 1. He is missed by many islanders, and I will miss my neighbor “checking up” on me at the lighthouse during the summer and engaging me in conversations about legal issues in bygone times. Interment will be at Grindle Hill Cemetery, Swans Island, in the spring. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Maine Veterans’ Home, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, ME 04401, or Hospice of Eastern Maine, EMHS Foundation, P.O. Box 931, Bangor, ME 04402-0931.

Selectman Jason Joyce has notified us: “Any island residents interested in picking up a field-dressed deer resulting from the island deer reduction program are encouraged to contact town Administration Assistant Karen Griffin at 526-4279.” He explained that the list is for those interested in any available excess deer, and that “a start date has not been announced yet, as the committee is still working with Inland Fisheries on that. When a start date has been determined, it will be posted around town.”

The Maine State Ferry Service Swans Island Public Hearing on the Rate Increase scheduled for Jan. 30 was cancelled owing to poor weather conditions. Karen Preston Griffin reports that the hearing has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the Swans Island School. She noted that if this rescheduled date is cancelled, the new date will be Thursday, Feb. 22.
