Kate Whitaker Chaplin posted a Facebook message on the Cranberry Isles page: “Louise ‘Twinkie’ Smith passed away quietly on Nov. 14 at age 98. She loved Islesford and all those who called it home. She always had a sense of fun, a quick (often acerbic) wit, and befriended the young and the old alike. If anyone has a memory or a story to share about her, please post them here!” There have been many responses, including examples of her wit and friendliness.
Here we are in late November, and there are still leaves on a number of trees. Across from the school’s playground is a tree whose leaves are still somewhat green. It’s impressive how many have refused to fall even in the strong winds we’ve had. The grass hasn’t turned brown yet. A few apple trees haven’t dropped all their apples, and some look like even the idea of dropping their apples is AWOL.
The sun is setting earlier and earlier here on Islesford. This Wednesday, Nov. 25, it set at 4 p.m., and Thursday saw it go from 4 p.m. to 3:59 p.m. We have four more minutes to lose, with Dec. 7-11 being the earliest sunset, 3:55 p.m. It will be noticeably lighter in the afternoons by New Year’s Day.
Islanders seem to be hunkered down, getting ready to head off island or have family and friends arrive for Thanksgiving. Safe travels coming or going, and happy Thanksgiving to all!
Thanksgiving dinner will be held at the community center Thursday at 3 p.m. on Great Cranberry Island. All are welcome to come and bring a dish.
