Dexter Lee, Swan’s Island Historical Society chairman, will present a talk on “Swan’s Island place names, past and present” at the Swan’s Island Library on Monday, July 6, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. He will identify the popular names over the years for coves, corners, beaches and landmarks around the island. Some have changed names over the years, but he will give all names he is familiar with for each place. There will be a map on the screen so he can point out such places as Lover’s Lane, Ghost Hollow, Dead Man’s Beach, Spirit Cove and others.
A “meet and greet” for Deputy Sheriff Rob Morang and his family will be held at the library on Friday, July 3, from 6:30-8 p.m or so. Come welcome our new deputy sheriff and his family to our community.
Jim Stone reminds us that the next Swan’s Island Electric Co-op board meeting will be held at the library on Thursday, July 2, at 6:30 p.m. The agenda will include an opportunity to meet the candidates running for 2015 Board openings, discussion of the July 23 SIEC annual meeting agenda and the status of the straw ballot to seek acquisition by Emera.
Margot Crawshaw informs us that the summer craft fair and flea market at the Methodist Church on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2p.m. starts today, July 2. The sale is open to anyone who has something they want to sell. The cost is a moderate donation to the church. Bring your own table. For more information, call Margot at 526-4242.
Annie Joyce welcomes grades K-8 to the Swans Island Day Recreation program. “Come have a blast at Day Rec playing outdoor games, doing crafts, cooking, exploring nature and enjoying the summer season! Please come equipped with a packed lunch or snacks, as well as water and sunscreen. Adults, please come in and register your child on his or her first day.” July hours for Thursdays are from 3-5 p.m. For Fridays and Saturdays, they are from 9 a.m. to noon. August hours will be posted later in the season because the schedule will change. Please ask Annie for a Rec Calendar when you register.
Tyler Philbrook announces that Night Recreation for ages 12-18 began this past Saturday and continues on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 6-9 p.m. at the Rec Center. Admission is $1, and Tyler says that they will play inside and outside games such as volleyball, pool, air hockey, basketball, badminton and more. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase.
