Warmer weather keeps ‘em coming

The Cranberry Island General Store is keeping to the fall schedule longer than usual this season, remaining open on Saturdays due to unseasonably warm weather and higher numbers of store visitors. No one seems to be complaining, holding onto their Saturday afternoon coffee and groceries a little longer this year.

Congratulations to the Cranberry Isles runners for finishing up a great season with Gary Allen‘s undefeated MDES cross-country team. During the last meet, both Cooper Sumner and Adele Palmer took ribbons for 13th place. Runners from the Longfellow School this year were Cooper Sumner, Adele Palmer, Carmen Walls and Samson Gaither.

Caldecott Award-winning author and illustrator Melissa Sweet will bring her new book “Some Writer!” to the Longfellow School on Great Cranberry on Friday, Nov. 4. “Some Writer!” is a biography of Maine writer E.B. White, best-known for his classic children’s book “Charlotte’s Web.” The public will be invited to join students in meeting Melissa. Contact Audrey Noether or Lauren Simmons for more details.

Operation Christmas Child is now accepting donations of shoebox-sized toys, tools, clothes and art supplies for children in need. There is a box for donations at the back of the GCI church, with one to follow shortly on Islesford. Donations will be accepted until Nov. 11. Please contact Darlene Sumner for a full donation wish list.

Happy belated birthday greetings go to Rosalie Kell on Oct. 23 and Chris White and Madeline Avery on Oct. 25. Happy birthday to Louise Millar, who turns 95 on Oct. 30!
