Walk this way

Steve Dock (and pet Nina) report that new walkways have been installed on the path to Fine Sand Beach and that this work was provided by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust. We thank MCHT for this path improvement and for fewer twisted ankles.

Iver Lofving intrigues us with the idea of hearing his forthcoming musical masterpiece, a rap song for the “Karaoke for a Cause!” show at the library on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 7-8 p.m. The show benefits the Swans Island Recovery fund. This fund is for the treatment of drug and or alcohol addiction, so that no one who wants to get clean and sober goes without treatment. Iver said, “You can pay to not sing, or you can sing your heart out! It will be fun!”

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Stephen Joyce, who passed away earlier this month. A gathering for celebrating the life of Stevie Joyce will be held at the Swans Island Methodist Church on Sunday, Aug. 7, from 2-4 p.m. If you would like to attend this celebration, please contact Dale Joyce at [email protected] or FaceBook message him.

A number of exciting upcoming events take place at the Swans Island library. Remember to visit the annual bazaar this Saturday, July 30, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Zack Field, a juggler and balloon artist from Bangor, will be at the bazaar from 12-1 p.m., and you won’t want to miss him.

A brown bag presentation (bring your lunch) at the library on Friday, Aug. 5, at 12 p.m., features journalist Laurie Schreiber. She will discuss her book about the history of Mount Desert Island boatbuilders, their families and the boatbuilding community. She also will present a slideshow.

Author Roy Neel will read from his book “The Electors” on Sunday, Aug. 7, and on Tuesday, Aug. 9. Cameron Colbeth will present a slideshow of photos he has taken while out in his lobster boat. Both events take place at 7 p.m. in the library.

A chowder and auction fundraiser for the eighth grade takes place on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at 5 p.m. in the Swans Island School gymnasium. Sue Treadwell reports that the class already has raised over $1,300 with the recent carwash and bake sale.

You won’t need to cook for another evening when you enjoy the Baptist Church’s fundraising supper on Thursday, Aug. 11, at 5 p.m. This event raises money for church upkeep. The cost is $10 per person aged 12 or older. A donation for children under 12 is greatly appreciated.

Happy birthday to Sadie Joyce, Dusty Staples, Gerri Lynn Smith, Deb Staples, Lorraine Stockbridge, Rusty Burns, Clay Savage, Betty Tozier, Kenny LeMoine III and Jodie Lee Mauger. Anniversary blessings to Chris and Emmie Sawyer.
