Voters approve SIEC sale

Ed Schwabe provided us with an update on the vote regarding the Emera acquisition of the Swans Island Electric Cooperative: “The SIEC office received 304 ballots by the March 15 deadline. Ten ballots were ruled incomplete because the member had forgotten to sign it, or the ballot was signed but the member had failed to mark the ballot one way or another. That left 294 ballots which were complete. Of these, 265 members voted to approve the acquisition by Emera (90.1 percent) and 29 members voted against the Emera acquisition (9.9 percent). Consequently, the Emera acquisition is approved. Our thanks to Deputy Sheriff Rob Morang for serving as our ballot counter.” Efforts are now underway to establish a closing date, then Emera will begin the installation of its own meters on both Swans Island and Frenchboro. This process could take a few weeks, and both utilities will work together to make this transition occur as smoothly as possible. While the delivery of power, billing and collection of payment plans transitions to Emera, SIEC will seek permission from state authorities to dissolve and will wind down its operations over the next 60-90 days.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Margot Elizabeth Anderson, who passed away on March 10. She was a woman whom many describe as “beautiful inside and out,” and she will be missed. Margot was buried beside her husband and beneath a Celtic stone on Rose Hill, Swans Island.

Dexter Lee, our retired selectman, reported that the “Swans Island town selectmen’s meeting day will change from Wednesday night to Thursday night effective immediately. The meeting time remains at 7 p.m.”

Deputy Rob Morang informed us: “I plan to take children to an ATV Safety Course on Saturday, May 6. This will be a day trip. We will leave the island on the first ferry and return to the island on the last ferry. If you’d like your child to participate or have questions, please contact me.”

Happy birthday to Mimi Rainford, Kyle Thomas Walker Staples and Bonnie Staples. Anniversary blessings to Tom and Bev McAloon.
