Valentine party, chili night planned

On Sunday, Feb. 8, at noon, a Valentine Party will be held at the Cranberry Isles Ladies Aid with food, fun, games and surprises planned for the event. Hope to see you there.

Islesford Congregational Church is having the 2nd Annual Chili Night on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 4:30 p.m. It is open to the public, and all proceeds will go to benefit the TLC! There are lots of chili chefs and wonderful bread makers around. There will be a special return boat for Great Cranberry and Mount Desert Island residents. Thanks to Cari Alley for all the work she does to plan this.

After two major storms last week, which included lots of cancelled boats and running out of x, y and z, another storm was due this Monday and Tuesday. The commuter boat was to run Monday morning; it was uncertain which runs the mail boat would make. This seems to be a repeat of last week, with another wait-and-see boat day for Tuesday. Many thanks again to Cori Alley for cleaning the roads on Islesford and for making broad clear spots at the library, church, office and store. Major thanks for pushing the plowed snow away from parking spots at houses. Thanks also to Blair Colby for keeping the same magic of keeping Great Cranberry open.

The recent winter weather has wreaked havoc with folks having off-island plans. Beal & Bunker has had to cancel several boats for safety purposes due to high winds and rough seas, and road conditions on the mainland would have made it prohibitive for a day of shopping if you could get off the island. With all of this in mind, we would like to thank the folks of Great Cranberry who keep things going on-island “when you can’t get there from here,” like the folks at the Great Cranberry Island General Store. When General Manager Hollie Stanley is unable to make the trip from Bucksport, Kelly Sanborn and Ingrid Gaither keep the home fires burning so folks can get needed supplies. Melissa McCormick, if she can get to Cranberry from Islesford, is always a welcome sight with her warm smile and tasty baked treats. Ingrid Gaither also can be found at the library on these less-than-friendly travel days to assist those in need of reading material and more, and if the storm is on a Monday or Thursday, you might find her at the Recycle Center for those who wish to venture out. Audrey Noether, the Cranberry Isles teacher who resides on Great Cranberry, had lessons at the library during the recent storms when boats could not run to Islesford for students to attend the Ashley Bryan School. Thanks also go out to those who ask their neighbors if they are okay, need wood, need to be shoveled out, etc. Thank you from a grateful community, you are appreciated.

Karin Whitney has returned home safely from her trip to Sweden to visit family and to surprise her mother on her birthday. According to husband Phil, Karin had a wonderful time. Glad to have you home safe and sound Karin.

Stefanie Alley adds to her collection of birthdays on the Feb. 7. Happy birthday wishes to Jackson Knox Spangler and Herman Savage on Feb. 9, to Danielle McCormick on Feb. 11 and to Nellie Horvath on Feb. 12. Tarnya Colby Sanborn will celebrate her birthday with her family on Feb. 13. Kirby Sholl also celebrates on Feb. 13. Liam Carroll Astbury will have a special day on Feb. 15, and Candace Corson will celebrate with husband Neal on Feb. 16. Feb. 18 is the birthday of Tim Shiro, and our very own Wesley Bracy “Jr.” will be another year younger on Feb. 19. Happy birthday, Jr., from all of us.
