UMaine class learns about island life

A group of students and their instructor from the “Education in a Multicultural Society” course at the University of Maine at Orono visited our island amidst the most recent snowstorm on Friday, Nov. 14, to learn more about our unique island culture. Instructor Annette Nelligan, accompanied by students Savannah Landis, Derek Derosier, Markus White, Andrea Evans and Miranda Grant, received engrossing information from Captain Aaron Sheridan, explored our school, shopped at Saturn Press, ate great food from TIMS, walked around the lighthouse, toured the island by car, made wreaths for the Mill Pond playground project at the library and participated in a group session with Nancy Ordway describing her interpreting business as well as what it was like growing up on the island. I thank Heather Webster, Leah Staples, Kathy Turner, Jeanne Hoyle, Christine Dentremont, Lacey Freelove, TIMS for special sandwich-making effort even when takeout was closed, Captain Aaron Sheridan, and Nancy Ordway for their invaluable assistance in making this field trip a great success for these future teachers and administrators.

Congratulations to Josh and Misty Amburg upon the arrival of their newest bundle of joy. Arriving on Oct. 18, Jesse George Amburg weighed 6 lbs.-10 oz. and measured 20.5 inches long. I saw him making friends with our police officer even as he made his way home from the hospital – smart kid!

Dr. Rick DuBois, veterinarian for the Swans Island Veterinary Clinic, will be on the island this Saturday, Nov. 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Atlantic Firehouse to give rabies shots and checkups. Dog rabies shots are $15 and cat shots are $25 (for rabies shots only, no exam).

Leah Staples reminds us that adult volleyball has started up again on Wednesday nights from 7-9 p.m. in the school gymnasium.

Congratulations to the talented winners of the Swan’s Island School Fall Harvest Poster Contest. First-place winners were Hope LeMoine (K-2), Hailey May (3-5) and Hannah Joy (6-8). First-place winners were awarded a blue ribbon and a sketch book with colored pencils. Second- and third-place winners were awarded participation ribbons.

Dori Ann LeMoine is selling boxes of fruit as a fundraiser for the band she is in at MDI High School. Dori will need to be paid when the order is placed, and the order must go in by Dec. 1. Various packages and pricing involving oranges, grapefruit, apples and tangelos are available. The fruit will arrive on Dec. 13 and can be delivered to you shortly thereafter. Please contact Dori if you are interested.

Reminding us about the Swan’s Island Community Thanksgiving on Friday, Nov. 21, Emmie Sawyer states, “It’s that time of year again! As we prepare for the holiday season, let us remember our friends and neighbors and how we can enjoy the company of each other and share a meal.” Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Happy birthday wishes go to Jesse George Amburg, Gary Hoyle, Bud Martin Jr. and Becky Davis. Anniversary blessings go to Spencer and Wendy Joyce and Paul and Ruth Joy.
