Congratulations to Josh Turner for being chosen as the December 2017 Student of the Month at Mount Desert Island High School. Josh has been described as “a kind, caring young man who listens respectfully to others and shares his own deep insights.” He is in the process of writing his first novel. A senior, Josh plans to continue fishing after graduating early. We are very proud of Josh and wish him many blessings in the future.
At a Maine State Ferry Service Advisory Board meeting on Thursday, Jan. 11, Sonny Sprague was one of the representatives from several year-round islands who expressed concerns that the proposed differences in prices for nonresidents and residents could widen the community divide on the islands. A member of the ferry advisory board, Sonny spoke out for our summer residents: “On Swans Island, 388 of the property tax payers are nonresidents and 387 are Maine residents. … They come from 43 states, and one lives in France. … We are all the same. The only difference is they are here for three to six months. … We go out and raise money for the town, and they give it. They support our communities, and we are just going to stick it to them? It just isn’t right. Without them, we wouldn’t be.” We thank Sonny for speaking up and inspiring us to be as diligent in our pursuit of fairness as he continues to be.
We extend our condolences to the family and friends of John Brown, who passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Jan. 5. No funeral or memorial service is planned, and those wishing to honor John with a memorial gift may do so to Town of (Friends of) Swans Island Lighthouse Committee (Check payable to: FOSIL), c/o Town Office, P.O.
