Town backs Fiberight

TRENTON — Trenton has become the latest municipality to decide to send its garbage to the proposed Fiberight solid waste processing plant in Hampden starting in 2018.

The Board of Selectmen voted 5-0 Tuesday night not to renew its contract with Penobscot Energy Recovery Company (PERC) in Orrington, which currently processes waste from 187 Maine cities and towns.

The organization that represents those municipalities has strongly recommended the switch to Fiberight, which would turn solid waste into biofuels instead of burning it to generate electricity.

So far, the municipal boards in Bar Harbor, Bangor and Brewer have decided to go with Fiberight. In many other municipalities, the decision will be made by voters at town meeting this spring.
