Swans Islanders mourn Joy, Sawyer

We extend our condolences to the many friends and family of Stephen Joy, who passed away recently. Steve died after sustaining injuries from a boat race accident; I’ve been told by quite a few family members that he passed while doing something he loved. Rest in peace. There will be a celebration of life for Steve at the Swan’s Island Church of God on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m. A light luncheon will follow the service.

Our sympathies also go to the family and friends of Corey Sawyer. For anyone wishing to send a card to Randy (Corey and Chris’s dad), Emmie Sawyer sends along his address: Randy Sawyer, 891 SE Seahouse Drive, Port St. Lucie, FL 34983.

This coming Monday, Oct. 17, marks the beginning of the fall ferry schedule. With the fall schedule, we change the afternoon trip times for Monday-Wednesday and Friday-Saturday, and the Sunday schedule is almost completely different from the summer schedule. Please take note of these and other schedule changes. Also note that parking at Bass Harbor is now free until May 2017.

Donna Wiegle announced that a flu shot clinic will take place at the Mill Pond Health Center on Monday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to noon. “If you have MaineCare or Medicare, please bring your card with you, and the cost will be covered. If you have private insurance, the cost is $40, and you will have to pay, but will receive a receipt that you can use to be reimbursed by your insurance provider. If you have any questions about the flu vaccine, please call Community Health Center at 244-5630.”

Dexter Lee updated us on current shellfish closures: “Softshell clams are still OK to dig here, but the area east of MDI to Canada is closed due to a marine toxin bloom (similar to red tide). Mussels are still OK in Seal and Mackerel Coves. Hen clam harvesting is closed statewide.” Dexter encourages us to visit www.maine.gov/dmr for the latest news.

Quote of the Week: We should all do what, in the long run, gives us joy, even if it is only picking grapes or sorting the laundry. – E.B. White

Happy birthday to Carrie Joyce, Rachel Elizabeth Johnson, Lisa Stanley and Jesse George Amburg.
