Swan’s Island: Waste collection and recycling

Karen Preston Griffin sends us town notices about waste collection and recycling: “The waste oil collection tank is located in the Town Office parking lot. The following fluids are accepted: engine oil, hydraulic oil, transmission oil, kerosene and house fuel. Prohibited fluids are water, gas and antifreeze. Contact the Town Office at 526-4279 for further information. Also, the issue we have had with the last two loads of recycling is being investigated to ensure that our loads have not become contaminated after departure from the island. I have talked to our solid waste manager and he has shared that there is confusion on the island; please check posters attached to the recycle dumpster to ensure your recyclables meet requirements. Please remember that there should not be any bubble wrap, loose plastic, or any paper bags lined with plastic, such as pet food bags. Also, cardboard needs to be flat — not just stepped on, but broken down and flat. Please contact the Town Office if you have questions.”

We thank all our ferry workers for keeping us informed of changes in the ferry schedule, cancellations and trips that limit the number of passengers. Also, please remember that we have just switched over to the winter ferry schedule which eliminates the 12:45 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. trips.

Gwen May reminds Swan’s Islanders that dog licenses and kennel licenses are due Jan. 1 of each year. Dog licenses are $6 for a neutered/spayed dog and $11 if they are intact. Once your puppy turns six months, it is required that you license him/her. Gwen will need to see a current rabies certificate plus a neuter/spay certificate, if it applies. Licenses will be charged a $25 late fee after Jan. 31. Also, boat registrations and documented boats are due. Don’t forget to keep the boat trailers current as well.

Quote of the Week: “Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man.” (Benjamin Franklin)

Happy Birthday to Ivy Jayne Butler, Dori Ann LeMoine, Maili Bailey, Melanie Carlson, Joshua Joyce, Leslie M. Harris, Spencer Joyce and Tammie Staples.
