Swan’s Island: Super bowl subs

We celebrate with Gary Rainford an honor recently bestowed upon him. He shares with us, “2018 was mostly dedicated to a new manuscript I’m writing called ‘Seven Springs, Bobbie’s last story, living in Maine with Alzheimer’s disease.’ These poems square off with the bitter reality, ‘To grow old is to lose everything,’ the opening line in Donald Hall’s poem ‘Affirmation.’ I am thrilled and honored to have one of Bobbie’s poems included in this forthcoming anthology by Encircle Publications honoring Donald Hall.”

The Maine Seacoast Mission’s Middle School Retreat has been rescheduled for Feb. 15-17. There’s still time to fill out the student/chaperone Information Form and send it by Feb. 1, along with $50 per student, to Douglas Cornman, 44 Hall Quarry Road, Mount Desert, ME 04660-6531. Checks should be made out to Maine Seacoast Mission. The form may also be emailed to Douglas at dcornman@seacoastmission.org and bring the fee on the first day of the retreat. Contact Douglas at 479-0707 with any questions.

Michelle Whitman says: “The 8th graders have begun making calls and taking orders for Super Bowl subs. Sandwiches are $6 and will be delivered prior to the game on Super Bowl Sunday. If you miss your call, please contact Ella, Grace, Sarah, Jordan, JR, Wyatt, or Michelle (974-9458) by Friday, Feb. 1. Thank you for your support, we’re almost there!”

Michelle also reminds us that Geiger Scholarships for middle school, high school, and college students are available through the Island Institute. The deadline to apply is Thursday, Feb. 28. Scholarships up to $5,000 for summer programs and up to $10,000 for college are available.
