Swan’s Island: Student meal program is available through December

It’s that time of year when fundraising kicks off for the spring eighth-grade trip.  Gary Rainford helped them get off to a great start with a Coffee Love ice cream benefit this past week: “Thank you, Swan’s Island friends, neighbors and families for your generosity. One scoop at a time, the eighth-grade class raised over $1,700 toward their eighth-grade trip. We thank Gary and Meri for their generosity in this fun event that benefits our kids.

We are in the last week of the Maine Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Maine and it’s not too late to be a part of the action. Rob Morang explains: I have registered and made a donation for this event to benefit the Special Olympics of Maine. I’ve decided to run all of the public paved roads on Swan’s Island between September 9-30. If you’d like to run (you decide how far), please register and make a donation. If you’d like the T-shirt, but don’t want to run, walk, or crawl, register and, if you want, I’ll run for you! You may even get me to commit to running farther. If you don’t want to send money over the internet, you may make a taxdeductible check out to Special Olympics of Maine (SOME) and get it to me this month. There are other ways to donate at this link somaine.org/get-involved/ways-to-donate/. Thanks, and see you on the roads.

Crystal Nelson DaGraca informs us of a wonderful meal program for our studentsThanks to funding from the Department of Education, the Swan’s Island School is able to offer a free breakfast and lunch to all children ages 0-18. This service is available through the week of Dec. 28. If your child is already attending the school, you do not need to sign up. Children attending school will receive the free breakfast and lunch at school. If your child does not attend Swan’s Island Elementary School, please sign up to pick up a weekly food box. You can register for a breakfastonly box, lunchonly box or a box that includes breakfast and lunch items. MDI High School virtualonly or inperson learners also qualify for these food boxes.

Pick up is at the Swan’s Island Elementary School on every Friday at 2 p.m. beginning on Friday, Sept25. High school students will pick up boxes at Swan’s Island Elementary School, not at the high school. Please stay in your cars when you arrive to pick up your box; Sue will place your food box outside the kitchen door and you may retrieve it after she has left.

Please spread the word to any family who you think could benefit from this program. If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected].

Happy Birthday to Les Ranquist, Paul Adam Joy, Oakley Carroll Walker, Donnie Staples and Deb Schwabe.
