Swan’s Island: Safety courses set

Karen Preston Griffin reports from the Jan. 10 Selectmen’s meeting minutes: “Myron Sprague, Jr., and Kathy Clark, Swan’s Island Ferry Advisory Board members, attended the January Ferry Advisory Board meeting in Rockland. Advisory Board members voted to recommend appealing the decision in the letter stamped Dec. 21 from the U.S. Coast Guard denying the ability of handicapped and medical customers of the Maine State Ferry Service to run their engines while underway. (In accordance with 46 CFR 78.40‐5 and MSFS Policy 100, ‘All vehicle’s engines shall be turned off when the ferry is underway, and the motors shall not be restarted until directed to do so once the ferry is secured to the landing. . . .’)

“The Advisory Board also discussed the need to be more proactive in Maine State Ferry Service management decisions and they reported that the makeup run to Frenchboro from Bass Harbor will move from 9:45 a.m. to 12 p.m.”

Mark your calendars for some special events on April 25. The Island Readers & Writers (IRW) is hosting a visit to Swan’s Island from Sophie Blackall, author of Hello Lighthouse, and I predict both young and old will enjoy the events associated with the visit.

Recently, Crystal DaGraca, Stevie Kowalczyk, Jeanne Hoyle, Laurie Farley and I met with Lisa Herrington and Alison Johnson of IRW to plan for this day, and we thank them for their time, this wonderful program, and the delicious food with which they lavished us.

Rob Morang relays to us: “The Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife will hold safety courses at the Swan’s Island School on March 22, 23, and 24. They will offer All Terrain Vehicle, Hunter’s Safety, Archery and Crossbow Safety courses during the weekend. The plan as of now is to hold the survival portion necessary for all courses on Friday afternoon/evening and then the other courses at different times throughout the weekend. Further information on when each course will be offered is forthcoming. Some courses will probably be going kind of late on Friday and Saturday.”

Quote for the week: “I know of only one duty, and that is to love.” (Albert Camus) Happy Valentine’s Day, one week in advance. My schedule for this upcoming week includes some testing in the hospital, so I am unable to report the news from Swan’s Island in next week’s edition.

Happy Belated Birthday to Steven Davis. Happy Birthday to Tammy Stockbridge Gott, Lawrence Stanley, Jackson Laws, Jacques Cesbron, Bud Martin III, Anna Belle Joy Ward, Lucia Tola Dy, Christine Dentremont, Kathy Krafjack, and Steve Wheaton. Anniversary Blessings to Jason and Jamie Matthews, Gary and Laurie Farley, Carroll and Lindsay Staples, and Katie Banks and Matt Wilson.
