Swan’s Island: Neighbors helping neighbors

Marsha Douty Carlson encourages charity in this season of giving: “The Advent Christian and Swan’s Island Baptist Churches are collecting non-perishable food items for the Bread of Life food pantry as part of our Advent Sharing project. Donations may be brought to church on Sundays in December. Donations of cash or checks to ‘Bread of Life’ may be put in the offering plates in an envelope labeled ‘Food Pantry.’

“Let’s be neighbors helping neighbors and share our blessings during this joyous season! Also, please join us on Sundays and be blessed by our fellowship, music, and pastor: Dec. 2, 9, and 23 at the Advent Church and Dec. 16 and 30 at the Baptist Church. All services begin at 11:00a.m.”

We send a special thank you to the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) of Saint Mary & Saint Jude of Northeast Harbor for their generous donation to the Swan’s Island food bank. We are blessed to have such caring friends on our neighboring island.

We are proud of our eighth graders’ fundraising efforts for their class trip and we thank those businesses and individuals who have donated goods and services to the recent auction. While shopping at Window Panes in Bar Harbor during the Midnight Madness sales, I ran into Julie Veilleux, co-owner of the store, who sang high praises for Ella Joyce, one of Swan’s Island’s eighth graders.

Ella had convinced Julie to donate an item from Window Panes, and said item commanded triple its value at the auction. Our thanks go to Window Panes and all others who have supported our eighth graders.

Bev McAloon invites us to join her in caroling: “Meet us at the ferry crew quarters for Christmas caroling on Saturday, Dec. 15, at noon. We want to sing a few songs to the crew before they head out on the first afternoon ferry run. From there we will make a plan for where else to sing. If you need a ride, let me or Nancy Carter know. We will end at the McAloon’s for some fish chowder and nibbles.”

Happy Birthday to Lori Goodwin, Marsha Douty Carlson, William James Smith, Shaylin May, Austin James LeMoine and McKayla Joyce.
