Swan’s Island: ‘Hello Lighthouse’ author visit planned

Josh Greene invites us to a Good Friday celebration at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 19, in the Swan’s Island Baptist Church. He notes, “This is an island-wide event, open to all. We will have ministers coming from all over Maine to speak about the last words on the cross.”

Meet author/illustrator Sophie Blackall on Thursday, April 25, at 3 p.m. in the Swan’s Island library. Blackall won the 2019 Caldecott Medal for her beautiful picture book “Hello Lighthouse.” She also won this medal for her illustrations in “Finding Winnie.” A native of Australia, Blackall has illustrated over 40 books and has travelled to many schools around the world. We are fortunate that our community is on her lighthouse tour with Island Readers & Writers.

Robert Gardner notifies us that the Swan’s Island Fire Department is asking for the community’s help again with burning fields. If you can help, please let him know or place your name on one of the signup sheets distributed throughout the island.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Suzanne Estler who passed away on Wednesday, April 10, in Orono. A celebration of her life is planned for Saturday, May 18, at 2 p.m. at the University of Maine’s Wells Conference Center. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Sue may be made to the Suzanne E. Estler, Ph.D., Student Support Fund by sending checks payable to the University of Maine Foundation, Two Alumni Place, Orono, ME 04469-5792, or online at our.umaine.edu/estler.
