Swan’s Island: Haller is Able

Congratulations to the newest able seaman on the Swan’s Island ferry, Karl Haller. For several months, Karl has worked on the ferry for a temp agency, and has just recently been hired as a permanent able seaman for the Maine State Ferry Service. His crew is led by Captain Vernon L. Lewis, with engineer Steve Davis and able seaman Bob Dumas.

Karl wishes to thank Marsha and Donald Carlson for their assistance during the days of his schooling; to Port Captain Daniel M. McNichol for believing in him, even before Karl proved his own abilities; and to all ferry riders, both islanders and others, who have cheered him on with encouraging words and praises of his performance on the job. Numerous islanders have expressed how pleased they are to once again see an islander in this particular job.

Meredith Creswell invites us to the first-ever island-wide Christmas Carol Sing: “At 10 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23, at the Advent Christian Church, we will have the first Swan’s Island Christmas Carol Sing, led by Maestro Spencer Joyce. We hope it will become a tradition. Just call out your favorite Christmas carols, and we will join together in singing and playing all the songs of the season. We will have a break at 10:45 a.m. for those who must leave, but you are welcome to stay for our worship service following the sing.”

The music students at Mount Desert Elementary School join me in thanking Dan Granholm and the Swan’s Island School for the loan of some djembes, African hand drums. I was recently the substitute music teacher for one week at MDES and it was a pleasure to work with some of the drums I procured for Swan’s Island School almost 10 years ago!

Karen Preston Griffin informs us: “The Deer Reduction Program began Monday, Dec. 17. Anyone interested in receiving a deer, please call the Town Office at 526-4279 and leave your name and number. This would be a whole carcass.”

Happy birthday to Belinda Doliber, Grace Rose LeMoine, Ella Joyce, Mary Christine Joy, Tom Duchesneau and John Follis.
