Swan’s Island: Encourage the spirit of giving year-round

Our hearts are filled with gratitude and appreciation for the many Thanksgiving dinners Wade and Rena Shaefer and the Church of God people so graciously cooked and delivered this year. In the mid-1990s, Paul JoyDoc Uber and Keith Wheaton – all church pastors on Swan’s Island at the time – came up with the idea of a Community Thanksgiving and the whole island (and more) has celebrated Thanksgiving as a community each year since then, with the sad exception of this year. Although this favorite community event was canceled this year owing to the pandemic, the Church of God has ministered to our souls in that special island community way, bringing together islanders even while we remain physically separated.

We are in the final weeks of the eighth-grade online auction and have a growing list of items on which to bid. The latest addition is a copy of Images of Swan’s Island Past and Present that has been signed by the author and artist, Ed Wheaton. Ed also donated a copy of The Illustrated Dictionary of Lobstering by Kendall Merriam of RichmondEd mentions that 99 percent of the illustrations were shot in and around Nelson White‘s wharf, signed by Ed himself as the photographer. A third donated book, “A Pocketful of Island Life by Ed Wheaton and illustrated by Gary Hoylecontains, according to Ed, a bakers dozen of poems written by myself and my son.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Jane Pomeroy who recently passed away. Gwen May shares with us: “The Pomeroys have been missed since they sold their home on the Island. I remember both of them with their huge happy smiles. They so loved Swan’s Island. If anyone wants to write to Bob, please message me for his address.

Terry Staples encourages the spirit of giving: With COVID-19 cases on the rise, it is a scary time for a lot of people. While you may be doing OK, a lot of your neighbors and friends are hurting emotionally and financially. If you are going to the grocery store and picking up your holiday meal supplies, maybe get an extra meal and donate it to The Bread of Life food pantry. This isn’t an island problem, it is countrywide problem. If you aren’t from Swan’s Island, buy that extra meal and donate it to your local food pantry. Make someone’s holiday a little brighter. We thank Terry for faithfully living up to this spirit year-round!

Happy birthday to Lesley Ann Ranquist, Rhonda Ranquist, Jean Ranquist, Autumn Staples, Piper Rose Stanley, Dan Hersey, Pat Dutille and Suzy Treadwell.
