Swan’s Island: Eighth-grade class meets fundraising goals thanks to community generosity

We all know the deliciousness of Sue Treadwell‘s peanut butter cups, the beauty of Jessica DeFrenn’s artwork and the handspun glories by Kim Colbeth, Becky Davis and many others, but have you ever seen the wonderful paintings and rope rugs by Sam Dy or the lovely wreaths with shells by Esther LeMoine? Discovering the many talents of our fellow islanders was a bonus when bidding on the eighth grade fundraising online auction. These goodies and so much more were donated to the auction and, according to Michelle Whitman, the auction raised $3,773 from these generous donations. Thanks to the generosity of the donors and bidders, fundraising goals were met. The spaghetti dinner, with a shout out to Gary Rainford and Tom McAloon, brought in $1,505.

The Swan’s Island Wassailers were in good voice as they made their rounds this past Sunday afternoon. Santa was on board, and the singers were on a mission to bring Christmas cheer on a very blustery day. With them standing on their festively decorated trailer towed by a Ford pickup, I was treated to a rollicking rendition of “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” as I stood in the middle of my dooryard. We thank the Wassailers for ushering in the spirit of the season in such a special way.

Chelsea Riedel shouts from the rooftop that Santa Claus is coming to Swan’s Island in a firetruck! From 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, Santa Claus will visit the parking lots of the firehouse, Baptist Church, library, Advent Christian Church, Mill Pond Health Center and the town office. Chelsea informs us: “This year will be the same as last year. Santa will be on the firetruck and an assistant will be passing out gifts. Please private message the P.I.K. page with your preferred gift pickup spot. If you are not on the P.I.K. page, please private message Tammy Tripler. We are asking that everyone follow CDC guidelines regarding masking and social distancing; we understand that family groups will be together.”

Happy birthday to McKayla Joyce, Stephanie Brown Cease, William James Smith, Austin James LeMoine, Naveena Marie Dy, Shaylin May, Belinda Doliber, Mary Christine Joy, Ella Joyce and Grace Rose LeMoine.
