Swan’s Island: Cyclists get helping hand

Maine Open Lighthouse Day is this Saturday, Sept. 8, and our lighthouse on Swan’s Island will open from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. This Saturday is also your last chance this year for a tower tour from one of our awesome tower tour guides, Sage Dentremont (the other awesome one, Oriana Waldren, has already returned to school).

Fran Chetwynd suggests checking out the Historical Society exhibit on display at the lighthouse: “It’s titled ‘Maritime Women on Swan’s Island’ and it was recently featured in Working Waterfront. If you haven’t visited the lighthouse to see the exhibit, now is a great time to stop by, check out the photos, and read the stories of our friends and neighbors who fish. Chances are you will find a photo of someone you know, maybe even you!”

So, tour the tower and shop for sweatshirts/t-shirts/hats, great books/prints, artworks from local artists, and other items. Peruse the exhibit and breathe in the tranquil ocean air. Hope to see you there!

The “Good Samaritan Award” for the week goes to both Annette Joyce and Tammy Tripler for helping stranded bicyclists. Annette loaned out her car and Tammy provided transportation around the island to cycling visitors who had blown out tires. Thank you, Annette and Tammy, for turning mishaps into fun adventures for our island guests.

We welcome new year-round residents Kimberly, Tony, and Jacob Galica. The Galicas have moved here from New Hampshire and Jacob has already begun school on the island. We extend our warmest greetings to them and hope they will call our island home for many years to come.

Congratulations to Elijah Joyce who was recently named ‘Athlete of the Week’ by the Mount Desert Islander. Elijah has made numerous contributions to the MDI High School Trojans and anyone around will tell you that he’s a remarkable young man as well. We are very proud of you and your accomplishments, Elijah.

Happy Birthday to George Kuck, Sally Solotaroff Mirkin, Vincent William Tapley, Vernon Johnson, Dave Niquette, David Joyce, Mandy LeMoine, and Nancy Davis. Anniversary Blessings to Charlie and Donna Wiegle, Ben and Belinda Doliber, Jean-Jacques and Sarah Cesbron, Erik and Sheena Greenlaw, Erik and Annie Swartzwelder, and George Kuck and Fern Burns.
