Swan’s Island: Contra dance, anyone?

Gwen May announces a change of date for the annual town meeting: “The annual town meeting, originally slated for Monday, March 4, was canceled owing to the recent storm and has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 9, at 9:00 a.m. in the Swan’s Island School gymnasium.”

Life on an island is quite adventurous and I learn new things every day. This past week, thanks to Jason Joyce and Dexter Lee, I learned the phrase “tougher than a boiled owl” and was supplied with a poem explaining a possible origin of the phrase. Don’t be surprised if you see or hear me trying out my new phrase in the next few weeks.

Bev McAloon offers a “fun possibility” to us if we respond quickly to her:  “There is a contra dance band that will come to the island on Saturday, March 23, via the Seacoast Mission’s Sunbeam. Please give me a thumbs up so we can see if there are enough interested people to have some fun! All ages are welcome.”

Speaking of town meeting (moderator of it), poetry and fun things brings to mind Gary Rainford. Gary updates us on his daughter Meri’s fabulous concession business at the ferry known in the past as Ferry Fare: “For Meri’s business, we recently purchased a sweet mobile café. Meri’s new company is called Coffee Love (she named it), and we will set up this summer to offer coffee, tea, espresso drinks (hot and cold), yummy baked treats and breakfast sandwiches. We will also offer Island Roast, which is our own cast-iron-roasted blend of Arabica coffee beans sourced from South America, Africa and Asia. We will keep our island friends and neighbors updated as we gear up for business. We are excited to offer outstanding coffee, espresso and breakfast options.”

Sonja Philbrook urges us to complete the town comprehensive planning survey: “The survey responses are coming in and the committee appreciates all who have taken the time to complete it. The deadline for submitting a completed survey is Friday, March 8, so please be sure to voice your opinion about the future of the island by that time. If you prefer a paper copy, please email us at [email protected] Thank you!”

Happy Birthday to Bernita Joyce Pelkey, Clara Estelle Riedel, Emily Banks, Angie LeMoine, Isabella Grace LeMoine, Kevin Staples, Donna Wiegle, Billie Jo Riedel, Gary Rainford and Gwen J. May.
