Swan’s Island: Bates College president to visit

Clayton Spencer, president of Bates College, will talk about college on Friday, April 26, at 6 p.m. in the Swan’s Island library. Mentioned among “Maine’s 50 most influential people” in 2014, Spencer has amassed numerous awards and honors, and her work includes impressive careers in government and at Harvard University before assuming the presidency at Bates. When talking on numerous occasions with Spencer, what has impressed me the most is how she seems to know and take care of all the students at Bates. I encourage all students, young and seasoned, to hear what this brilliant and fascinating woman has to say.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Sheila Ann (Coburn) Doane who passed away Tuesday, April 9. Per Sheila’s request, there will be no services.

Dr. Timothy Oh and the staff of Caring Hands of Maine Dental Center will be at the Mill Pond Health Center on Friday, May 3. Please call his office in Ellsworth at 667-6789 to schedule an appointment.

Karen Preston Griffin notifies us of a public informational meeting about forms of town government, held Thursday, April 25, at 1 p.m. in the Swan’s Island library. Terry Staples will serve as moderator and the guest speakers are Durlin Lunt, Town Manager of Mount Desert, and James Fortune, Administrative Assistant of Cranberry Isles. Unfortunately, the scheduled date precluded anyone coming and participating from the Maine Municipal Association. Discussion will center on different types and roles of town governance, including selectmen, administrative assistants and town managers.

After the meeting, I suggest hanging out at the library until 3 p.m. to meet Sophie Blackall, author and illustrator of “Hello Lighthouse” as well as our friends with Island Readers & Writers.

If you find yourself on Mount Desert Island April 25, listening to Gary Rainford reading his latest poems should prove quite enjoyable. He’ll be at the Jesup Memorial Library in Bar Harbor at 7 p.m.

Happy Birthday to Fran Chetwynd, Kevin Brenden Walker, Boston Kenneth LeMoine, Betsy Matheson, Calvin LeMoine, Donald Carlson, and Sarah Jae MacDonald.
