Family news from Al Buswell is always impressive and deserves our hearty congratulations: “In a Change of Command ceremony held in Stuttgart , Germany, Lieutenant Colonel Philip Buswell assumed command of 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne). A battalion command is regarded as a prestigious and sought-after posting for a career officer, relatively few such postings being available. In Special Forces, the opportunity is rarer still.
Present at the ceremony were Phil’s wife, Vanya, son, Alex, and newborn daughter, Vicky. Also attending to honor their ‘little brother’ were sisters Amy and Anna. Just prior to that ceremony, Phil was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, in recognition of outstanding performance in his previous posting.”
Jeanne Hoyle shares information regarding a free show: “Come one, come all to the Sweet Chariot Music Festival’s free show for children and families at the Swan’s Island library on Thursday, Aug. 2, at 1:30p.m. We will have shanty singing, children’s songs and plenty of chances to sing along … and maybe even dance the jig!” This exciting event is free.
Jeanne also encourages us to visit the art exhibit at the library this month. “Stop in to see (and maybe purchase) photographs by Dale Joyce and Jennifer Helman, Debby Shipler, and mixed medium art work by Jessica DeFrenn. The library receives 20 percent of the proceeds from the sale of Dale’s photographs and Jessica’s art work. All proceeds from the sale of Debby’s photographs benefit the library. Thank you to all the artists!”
Emily Banks gears us up for the 11th Annual Swans Island 5K Road Race on Saturday, July 28. She informs us that the registration is at 8 a.m. with the race commencing at 9. The route begins at the Swans Island School and ends at the Rec building. The cost to register is $10. A T-shirt is included with registration.
Rob Gardner invites us for lobster and requests our food donations: “Please join us at the Atlantic Fire Station on Sunday, July 29, from 12-2:00 p.m. for our annual lobster bake fundraiser to benefit the Swans Island Fire and EMS departments. As always, we are looking for donations of salads and pies, cakes, cookies, and other desserts, but mostly pies. Everyone asks for pie! We hope to see you there.”
Margot Crawshaw announces that the weekly craft sale and flea market continues each Thursday. “The hours of the flea market are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Anyone who has something to sell is invited to participate.
