Snow, winter plans still in the air

Out on Islesford, much of the week was a continuous heavy volume of white air and white ground. Boats were cancelled a couple of times – have an overnight bag on the mainland somewhere! It’s hard to go off island for appointments, and then have the roads too dangerous with snow and ice. “The afternoon mailboat and the 5 p.m. commuter boat are cancelled. Where are you now?” “I guess over here again tonight.” (repeat each day, with the variation of full day cancellations.)

Mary E. Schuch and Tom and Becca Powell went to Bangor for the EMT practical exams. They spent Friday night in Bangor so they could get to the exam on Saturday even if there were snow on the ground. Congratulations to each of them for passing! Next is the final written exam, but that has a more flexible scheduling. Many thanks to Jeremy Alley for going over to Northeast Harbor when they got back well after the last mail boat.

A Sunday afternoon surprise baby shower was planned for Becca. Tom and Becca went to Islesford after the Saturday exam so they’d be there for the service on Sunday. Their weekend was scheduled perfectly for Becca’s sister Amy Caitlin Doster to come up as a surprise for the shower. Amy drove up from Pennsylvania on Friday and took the evening commuter boat out to Great Cranberry and moved in to Tom and Becca’s house. She helped set the Ladies’ Aid up for the party and had supper with the group she worked with.

After Islesford’s church service, there was a special boat from Northeast Harbor to Islesford, then over to Great Cranberry for the amazingly popular (among women) “Valentine’s Party,” for which Becca had made a chocoholic’s dream dessert. It was a wonderful success of inter-island events with lots of celebrating a shower for Becca. Included in the trip and shower were: Lindsay Eysnogle, who returned from MDI with Jason Pickering and their daughter, Luciana Pickering, then hopped back on the boat by herself for the trip to Great; Amy Palmer and Adele; Mary E. Schuch, Sally Rowan, Kaitlyn Duggan, Joy Sprague, Ann Fernald, Erica Fontaine, and Barb Fernald; Melissa Amuso, with Bea and Xander; Cari Alley and her children Brenna, Rubye and Wyatt. Apologies to anyone I missed!

Needless to say, snow fell the whole time, and the islands keep on being white with some deep drifts. The utilities trucks have been out to Islesford, supplying propane, oil and kerosene on Saturday and Sunday. Many thanks to those who came out, especially in the cold and snowing weather. And the island snow trucks have gone around so much they probably don’t need their drivers any more, but we’re glad to see them at the wheel anyway.

Miklos Pogany and Cary Samuel might celebrate their birthdays with chocolate hearts, since it’ll be Valentine’s Day; Denise McCormick has a birthday party on the agenda for the Feb. 16, and Dedi Whitaker‘s party will be Feb. 19. Happy Birthday to all!

We look forward to reporting all the news. Send items to us by 5 p.m. on Sunday. For Islesford, email Sally Rowan at [email protected], and for Great Cranberry, reach Eileen Richards at 244-5684 or [email protected]
