Smith to retire gavel

BAR HARBOR — For 63 years, the Smith family has held the reigns of Bar Harbor’s annual town meeting. But that streak comes to an end this year as attorney Chadbourne Smith steps down as moderator.

He has guided town meeting for 40 years “with great distinction,” according to a resolution signed by town councilors earlier this month. His father, Judge Edwin R. Smith, moderated the meeting for 23 years beginning in 1952.

“Chad will be long remembered for his quiet demeanor, his thoughtful approach and his diplomatic manner, which together enabled him to calmly guide voters through the most contentious issues,” the resolution reads.

Smith will be honored at town meeting on June 2 at 7 p.m. in the Conners Emerson gym.
