“Save Our Sound” cruise scheduled

MOUNT DESERT — WERU’s BoatTalk Cruise on Somes Sound departs from the Northeast Harbor dock Sunday, Sept. 14, at 1:30 p.m. The two-hour voyage will draw attention to the declassification of Somes Sound from fjord to fjard 1998.

WERU’s Alan Sprague said that the lack of a “dead zone” led to the change, “So we’re going to fix that … we’re going to drop overboard a granite plaque inscribed with ‘Long live the Grateful Dead,’ creating a ‘dead zone’ on the bottom of Somes Sound.”

The plaque will have the names of “Bottom Liners,” donors of $50, etched into it also. Spectators on Diver Ed’s boat, Starfish Enterprise will witness the event, which will be documented by WERU, other media and a representative of the Mount Desert Island Historical Society.

Tickets are $20, children under 12 free. Starfish Enterprise is handicapped accessible, but wheelchairs users should contact WERU in advance. To donate or buy a ticket, call WERU at 469-6600 or email [email protected] The cruise benefits WERU and the MDI Historical Society. Diver Ed is donating his services and Freshwater Stone of Orland is donating the engraved plaque.
