Rotary Roundup

By John Willett

BAR HARBOR — Rotarians come in all shapes and sizes; male and female; young and old; from all walks of life.

That has never been more apparent than this month, as the MDI Rotary Club celebrates December by launching their “I am Rotary” campaign. Throughout the month, some of MDI’s citizens have been photographed holding an “I am Rotary” sign, with a short explanation as to why they became Rotarians.

The club also has embraced the diverse nature of our organization through December’s meetings and programs. We started the month with a classification talk by one of our older members, Burt Richie, who attends the meetings even though he has to reserve a sizeable chunk of time by taking the ferry ride from Swans Island, where he lives. A very committed Rotarian.

The following week was an inspirational talk from the woman almost singularly responsible for the club supporting the Panama Wheelchair Project, our favorite Panamanian, Susy Davis. From a wonderful video detailing an Arkansas Club’s wheelchair giving trip to a review by Davis of the remaining steps necessary to get our wheelchairs into the proper hands next March, the afternoon reminded everyone in the room why he or she was a Rotarian.

Finally, Pat’s Pizza in Bar Harbor was the scene of Rotary’s Holiday Party, featuring a visit by Santa Claus and our favorite auctioneer, Lisa Horsch Clark. Almost 60 Rotarians celebrated the season and our successes in 2014 and in the future.

I am Rotary. Shouldn’t you be one too? Contact Ron Wrobel at [email protected] or attend an upcoming meeting as a guest. The schedule is online at mdirotary.org.
