Poetry, pot lucks and summer fun

The annual Islesford Literary Evening is coming up at the end of this month. Thursday, July 26, is the day. Come support the Islesford Library. Cindy Thomas will have an Adopt-a-Book list. Give your choice of books in honor or memory of a person or an occasion. Erica Merrill, involved since Sarah Corson began Literary Evening in 1979, is now the principal organizer; Sarah has been the emcee many times; Rick Benjamin has filled in for Sarah some of the last few years. Many thanks to Sarah, Erica, and Cindy for all their work.

Safety is one of the most important parts of time on the island. Please remember to walk on the docks. Don’t run or bicycle on the dock. Push bicycles to and from the ferry docks, don’t ride them, and don’t leave bicycles along the side of the docks or in groups at either end.

Golf cart safety is not always an age issue, but remind your guests and renters that a driver must have a legal driver’s license to operate them. Those with a learner’s permit may drive a golf cart as long as they are accompanied by a licensed driver. Licensed drivers and accompanied permit holders are the only drivers covered by insurance for motor vehicle or golf cart.

Control dogs such that they are close to those walking them. Dogs can be wonderfully friendly, but not everyone wants to be greeted up close by even the sweetest puppy or friendliest subtle older dog.

There will be an Islesford Boatworks silent auction on Saturday, Aug. 4. Donations of auction items should be made before Aug. 2. If you can’t make it for the auction but would like to support Boatworks financially, donations would be welcome.

Next Monday, July 16, will include the movies “Apollo 13” downstairs and “Madagascar” upstairs. In this PG movie, “Unaware of what’s outside the zoo, four animals escape, unwittingly assisted by four mixed-up penguins, and find themselves in Madagascar.”

Fourth of July on Cranberry was an epic holiday with a parade and wonderful events at Cranberry House topped off with spectacular fireworks lighting up Spurling Cove. A launching party was held at Newman & Gray Boatyard for the vessel Moonshot owned by Jim Garnett and family. The backdrop of an American flag filling the open doors of the boathouse added to the holiday atmosphere. Even the heat of the day could not dampen the spirits or appetites of those attending as they enjoyed the delicious BBQ by Alleyway, Cory Alley and family. Thank you to Jim and to all who worked to make the holiday special for everyone.

“I remember myself, age five, sitting on a porch overlooking a very muddy road. The day was rainy. I was wearing rubber boots, yellow – no, not yellow, green – and for all I know, I’m still there.” Joseph Brodsky. Russian and American poet (1940-1996).
