TREMONT — A request by a theater group for use of the Murphy and Tremont Consolidated School parking lots during summer performances was turned down Monday by selectmen.
Andrew Simon of the Barn Arts Collective made the request. The collective hosts theatrical events in a barn on property Simon owns directly across from the parking lots.
According to Kathi Thurston, chairman of the board of selectmen, Simon said he would attend the meeting but did not show in order to argue his case.
“I support the theater, but I have a problem opening the town’s parking lots to a private business,” Thurston said.
Selectman Stewart Murphy pointed out that the requested use was prohibited by the town’s parking ordinance.
“‘No’ means ‘no’ to me,” Murphy said.
Newly elected selectman Kevin Buck suggested that the ordinance itself should be updated.
Murphy’s motion not to allow the use of the lots by the Barn Arts Collective carried 3-2, with Buck and Chris Eaton casting the opposing votes.
