Pair buys Gross house

Lauren Simmons and Josh Gray have bought the Gross’ house on Merrill Road. They’re working on getting it ready and will move in later this year. Congratulations, Lauren and Josh!

Cindy Thomas had time to read to the young children and invited them to use construction paper to make Halloween decorations. Non-pie pumpkins went home, and the kids had a good time.

Susan Valdina and Ashley Bryan went to Virginia Tech to see Nikki Giovani. Nikki’s art collection includes one of Ashley’s collages from “Beautiful Blackbird.”

Nelia Dunbar, daughter of Charlie and Nelia Dunbar, has worked in Antarctica over the years. She has posted the news that the Ross Sea in Antarctica will become the world’s largest marine protected area. Nelia has a background in geology and geochemistry and is the new director of the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources. Congratulations, Nelia. She and her husband, Bill McIntosh, spend some time with TCI’s former Selectman Charlie and Nelia on Bear Island.

A storm knocked power out on the mainland, and it graciously shared its outage with the islands. The good thing was the islands didn’t have to wait for someone to make it out here to fix whatever, and the power outage lasted only a few hours.

There was a good turnout for pumpkin carving at Rosalie Kell‘s place Saturday afternoon. The Powells and Sumners attended, with even the littlest members of the families, Lewis and Audrey, getting their hands messy and their cheeks slobbered on by Rosalie’s yellow lab, Rob Roy. Willoughby and Josh Hasting, who have just finalized their plans to stay for the winter, enjoyed donuts and cider, just a taste of coming seasonal festivities and the slower pace of island life. Standing by a warm fire, a steaming cup of hot cider in hand, surrounded by friends, I couldn’t imagine they weren’t already feeling right at home.

This Saturday, Nov. 5, Ashley Bryan will present “Freedom over Me” at a book launch in Portland. The launch will be 2:30-4:30 p.m. at Portland Public Library’s Rines Auditorium, 5 Monument Square.
